President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Solomon Soyebi as the acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A statement signed by the INEC Secretary, Abdullahi Kaugama, said the appointment was in conformity with section 14 (1a) of the third schedule of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria.

It stated that the section stipulated that the INEC should be headed by a Chairman, who, among other considerations, must not be less than 50 years of age.

The statement added that Mr. Soyebi’s appointment would be pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, of the three National Commissioners serving in the commission, Mr. Soyebi, who is more than 50, has met the constitutional requirement.

The new acting Chairman is expecting to meet with staff of the commission on Wednesday, to address them.
