An unhinged passenger attacked a stewardess on a flight from New York to Chicago Thursday night, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Detroit so the woman could be arrested.

According to passenger Matthew Goldgraben, the woman involved in the incident came and asked to sit down next to him and he said OK.

A few minutes later, flight attendants came around for beverage service and one of the stewardesses accidentally spilled a drink. It’s unclear if the flight attendant split it on the woman, or just near her.

That’s when Goldgraben says the woman snapped and started attacking the flight attendant.

Shackled: A passenger, left, on a Chicago-bound plane helps arrest an unruly woman on board the flight Thursday night

He tells WXYZ that the woman had her hands at the flight attendant’s throat – ripping off her necklace and scratching the woman’s face – before a few other passengers rallied and forced the violent passenger down on the ground.

The pilot then diverted the plane to Detroit, Michigan, around 8:15pm where police boarded the plane and arrested the woman.

Video shows the moment they carried the woman off the plane, one officer holding her legs and the other carrying her upper body.

The plane was grounded for about an hour before it was cleared to take off for Chicago.

According to NBC New York, the woman may have been suffering from a medical condition.

Detroit Metro Airport Police spokesman Michael Conway told the news station that the other passengers injured by the woman during the flight plan to press charges.

Police: When the plane was forced to divert to Detroit, police came on board the flight to take the woman off in handcuffs

Forced off: A man who was sitting next to the woman says she started attacking a flight attendant out of the blue, when the stewardess was cleaning up a spilt drink
