During an interview ahead of Paris Saint-Germain‘s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Manchester City this week, Thiago Motta was asked whether the Sky Blues would be tougher opponents than Chelsea.
PSG are facing their second consecutive Premier League opponents in the Champions League, having seen off Chelsea in the round of 16.
That meeting between the two capital clubs was their third consecutive knockout bout in the UCL, with PSG building on their last 16 triumph in 2014-15 to advance past the Pensioners once again.
A 2-1 victory for the French champions at the Parc des Princes was followed by a 2-1 triumph at Stamford Bridge as Laurent Blanc’s side romped to a convincing 4-2 aggregate victory over their capital counterparts.
However, PSG face a stiffer assignment altogether in the quarter-finals when they go toe to toe with Manchester City.
While the Citizens—like Chelsea—are enduring a miserable domestic campaign, they haven’t been nearly as incompetent as the reigning EPL champions, and have their sights set on making history in the Champions League this season.
Speaking in light of PSG’s Ligue 1 bout against OGC Nice this weekend, midfielder Motta was asked whether he expected City to be sterner opponents than Chelsea.
“I don’t know,” the veteran replied, in quotes as relayed by Orange. “We’ll see on Wednesday.
