A former team-mate of shamed Sunderland star Adam Johnson is to stand trial for rape.
Former Premier League midfielder Cabral was arrested on suspicion of two counts of raping a woman in the North East and is due to appear in court next month.
The 27-year-old will appear under his real name Adilson Tavares Varela.
Now playing with FC Zurich in Switzerland, he is accused of attacking the woman on January 25 last year while he was with Sunderland.
The club released a statement on February 2 stating the former Basel midfielder had left “by mutual consent”.
Varela was charged on June 24.
The former Swiss international, now with FC Zurich, was charged with two counts of rape in June and made his last appearance at Newcastle crown court in November.
A court spokesman said today: “Adilson Tavares Varela is due to stand trial on two counts of rape on April 25.
“The case has been fixed for trial, and is listed for three days plus. He has appeared before the court on previous occasions, the last hearing on November 2 last year.”
Northumbria Police added: “We can confirm that Adilson Tavares Varela was arrested on January 25 last year and subsequently charged with rape on June 24.”
Sacked Johnson, 28, was was convicted of sexual activity with a girl of 15 he groomed on March 2.
He faces up to ten years jail.
