Chelsea chiefs demanded an explanation from Jose Mourinho over the sale of Romelu Lukaku before firing him, it has been revealed.
The People says the form that Everton’s ex-Stamford Bridge striker is showing in front of goal this season was used against the Portuguese as the champions’ season unravelled.
Mourinho was quizzed over the £28million sale of Belgium international Lukaku in summer 2014.
Current frontman Diego Costa’s repeated no-shows led to frustration that Lukaku – a player the club had scouted, signed for £18m in 2011 and then persevered with during two season-long loan deals – had been allowed to leave.
Mourinho struggled to find a foil for Costa – the long-term replacement for club legend Didier Drogba.
