Mauricio Pochettino believes Dele Alli can have a similar impact on Tottenham as Paul Pogba has on Juventus.
The 19-year-old midfielder signed a long-term deal with Spurs on Tuesday, keeping him at White Hart Lane until the summer of 2021.
Alli has already made a massive impact at Tottenham since arriving from MK Dons in the summer and his manager believes he can continue to take the next step and become a top quality player of enormous value just like France international Pogba.
“Today, football is about being versatile. We need to help a player like Dele Alli improve, not put him in a box,” Pochettino told the club’s official website.
“He needs to feel free on the pitch and we need to help him improve in different positions because a versatile player, like Pogba, has a big, big value.
“He’s a special player. He is box to box but he has real skill on the ball.
“When he plays like a number 10 he makes the movement like a striker and when he plays number eight or number six he plays like a holding midfielder.
“He is very clever and that’s his best quality. It’s not because he runs a lot, it’s how he reads the game.”
Alli has quickly seen his stock rise since arriving in North London having become an integral part of Pochettino’s Spurs lineup as well as featuring for the England team on four occasions, which has led to the new and improved deal.
Pochettino added: “It’s very good news for us and for him. Dele Alli deserves it after the last six months to improve his salary and his contract.
“To achieve the level of the team-mates, now he is and international, plays regularly in first team he deserves all he takes.”
