Manchester United have dismissed reports linking them with a summer move for Real Madrid outcast Fabio Coentrao and reassured fellow left-back Luke Shaw that he still has a massive future at Old Trafford.

The teenage defender joined the Red Devils in a £30 million deal last summer, but has failed to reproduce the kind of performances he delivered at former club Southampton last season.

After struggling to maintain his fitness and form there has been some speculation about Shaw’s future in Louis van Gaal’s side, particularly after rumours emerged that Coentrao could follow the £120,000-a-week star  to the Theatre of Dreams.

However, chief sports writer of the Daily Star, Jeremy Cross claims there is no truth in the stories and that the young England international is still expected to go on and become a hugely influential member of the first-team squad.

“Luke has had some bad luck with injuries this season,” explained a club source. “But he is still expected to go on and become a hugely influential and important member of the team for a long time.

“[Because of that] Fabio Coentrao is not someone the club has an interest in signing.”

Coentrao has fallen out of favour at the Santiago Bernabeu under Carlo Ancelotti, losing his place in the starting XI to Brazilian full-back Marcelo.

His lack of regular action has forced the Portugal international to consider his options, and he looks set to leave Los Blancos when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
