Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has fired back at Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri is critical of Guardiola’s man-management, having worked with the Spaniard at Bayern Munich.

“I try to help my players every single day but of course the players might not understand that,” he says. “They go to the media because they don’t play. I spoke to Shaqiri about why he didn’t play at Bayern but I cannot tell him every weekend.

“I take the decisions and players who don’t play are not happy. They are not happy for one reason, they feel ‘the coach doesn’t love me’.

“All 30 players deserve to play but the rules say only start with 11. You spend all week developing relationships in training, speaking to players, communicate. Then you have to leave them out and they are like ‘What is the matter with this guy?'”
