Arsenal will be hoping Barcelona win the Champions League this season as they will be due a windfall of €3.8m if they do so, reports Spanish newspaper Sport.
Barcelona will contest the final against Juventus at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 6 and will be favourites to lift the big eared trophy.
Should they succeed, the first thing they will do is celebrate wildly, but the second thing they will do is cut a fat cheque made out to Arsenal Football Club.
Arsene Wenger shrewdly entered a clause into the deal that saw Thomas Vermaelen join Barcelona that said if Barcelona win this season’s competition they would be due a payment of around £2.75m.
That will add to the £7.25m initial payment that Barcelona made, bringing the total to upwards of £10m.
The payment will be all the more sweeter for Arsenal fans as Barcelona could not have signed a worse player if they had tried.
Arsenal’s former captain has spent the entire season getting to know the Nou Camp medical team and, rather remarkably, is yet to make his debut.
Vermaelen has now returned to full training and has been tipped to make his debut should Barcelona seal the title with a game to spare.
However, the Belgium international has a lot to prove to win over some very sceptical Barcelona fans.
