Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has been hit with a three-match La Liga touchline ban for his antics during his side’s 1-0 win over Malaga on Saturday.

The Argentine appeared to instruct a ball boy to throw a ball on to the pitch to disrupt a Malaga attack as Atleti kept pace with Barcelona at the top of the table.

He was sent to the stands at half-time, and said afterwards: “It is clear the referee took the correct decision.”

Angel Correa’s goal meant Atletico stayed level on points with Barca with three games remaining. City rivals Real are a point further back.

Simeone will be on the touchline this evening as Atleti host Bayern Munich at the Vicente Calderon in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

He will miss fixtures against Rayo Vallecano, Levante and Celta Vigo.

Atletico have 10 days to appeal the decision.
