Should Arsenal sell Mesut Ozil? Has Mesut Ozil lived up to his price tag?

When Mesut Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for a record transfer fee for the London club of an estimated £42.4 million pounds. The German play maker won the FA Cup in his first season but has he really lived up to his price tag?

Most recently Arsenal legend Thierry Henry made a controversial comment after Arsenal’s draw with Chelsea saying that both Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil have not stepped up in big games. Henry then singled out Ozil and said:

“I will single out Mesut Ozil, who made his eighth appearance against a top-four team today. “Zero goals, two assists. That is not enough. Since joining Arsenal he has 14 assists. Now if you look at Fabregas at Chelsea, he has 16 assists in one season.”

Ozil clearly hasn’t turned up in the big games and funnily enough even his greatest asset, his assists have not been to a high enough level. Chelsea paid a much lower fee for ex-Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas, who has outshone him already in one season compared to Ozil’s two.

Moreover, Ozil was bought to win games on his own like other Arsenal midfielders such as Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla. Sanchez has won games on his own for Arsenal this season with 16 goals and eight assists. Sanchez made the team of the year in his first season at the London club.

Maybe Sanchez is not a completely fair comparison but based on transfer fee it is. In terms of style of player Cazorla and Ozil are more similar. Cazorla has also outshone Ozil. Ozil was not involved in Arsenal’s away win to ManchesterCity whilst Cazorla starred in that game.

In addition Ozil does not provide enough defensively. He does not made enough tackles and can be found high up the pitch when the opposition on the attack. Ozil has been described before as lazy and this could be true. If the 26 year old is on bad form he is usually not involved at all in the game.

The German play maker has failed to take games by the scruff of the neck so far in his Arsenal career. He provides little defensively, has not stepped up in games against the top four and has not made the same impact as the likes of Sanchez and Fabregas. These factors make one question whether Ozil has lived up to his extraordinary price tag.
