Returning Chelsea defender David Luiz won’t be used in a midfield role this season despite his versatility, manager Antonio Conte has revealed.
Luiz is back in west London after re-signing from Paris St Germain on deadline day and said he’s ready to play wherever the manager chooses.
Although the Brazilian’s attacking qualities are considered an asset – and a weakness for his tendency to neglect defensive responsibilities – Conte is sure Luiz will be best utilised at the back.
“I think David Luiz is a centre back, he’s played a lot of games in that position,” the Italian told Chelsea TV.
“I know sometimes he’s played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre back.”
