Arsenal are preparing to offer Alexis Sanchez a five-year deal that could make him the top earner at the club.
As we revealed last month, the Gunners are moving to tie down a number of first-team stars, including Chilean ace Sanchez and playmaker Mesut Ozil.
Sanchez, who helped Arsenal win the FA Cup last season and scored the winner for his country in the summer’s Copa America final, has proved to be an outstanding buy for manager Arsene Wenger.
Forward Alexis cost £29.75 million when signed from Barcelona in July last year. And he has impressed everyone at the North London club – staff and players – with his attitude and his commitment.
That was illustrated in the close-season, when he reported back early from international duty to make himself available for the first Premier League game against West Ham on August 9 – just 36 days after that Copa America final.
Wenger now has the necessary finances to offer Alexis – whose current agreement runs out in 2018 — a tempting pay-rise in a bid to ensure he stays long-term at Arsenal, with contract talks likely to start this side of Christmas.
Ozil is currently Arsenal’s top earner on around £140,000 a week and could also be due a new deal.
Although the German is on a contract that does not run out until 2018, the club will be keen to extend it before he gets anywhere near going into its final two years.
The 26-year-old, who won the 2014 World Cup, enjoyed an impressive end to last season and is now showing his best form on a consistent basis.
Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal, 29, has also agreed a new contract to stay at the club, who are tracking Dutch youngster Riechedly Bazoer.
