A student was arrested and charged to court on a one-count charge of murder after he allegedly stabbed his senior to death with a broken bottle during a fight in Lagos State.
The accused, Benjamin Sunday, 18, who resides at No. 4 Haruna Street, Ifako area of the state, was arraigned before Justice Ipaye of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja.
The corpse of the deceased student, Mayowa Akinoye, was reportedly discovered on the decking of a building, Vanguard reports.
The suspect and the deceased were said to have gotten into a fight after they returned from Africa Shrine on the fateful day.
The defendant in a statement made to the police said: “The problem started on Friday 31/05/2013 at Africa Shrine. When I was leaving at 5am, I saw Mayowa Akinoye (deceased) who was my senior in school with six girls. They were also at the shrine and about to go as well. So we all left.
“One of Mayowa’s girls started abusing me and I also abused her. Instead of Mayowa to ask the girl to stop abusing me, he shouted at me and I refused to stop as well. The next thing, Mayowa gave me a blow and we started a fight.”
According to state counsel, Mr Akin George, the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
Ipaye adjourned the case to Thursday, November 19, 2015 for continuation of trial.
