Peter Nweke, one of the suspects in the kidnapping of Professor Kamene Okonjo, the mother of Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has confessed to receiving N12million ransom and claimed a member of the victim’s family assisted in the crime.
The mother of the former minister of finance was reportedly abducted in 2013 by a 12 man gang in Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta state and was released 5 days later although it wasn’t revealed if any ransom was paid then.
Leadership reports that 27 year old Nweke confessed to police in Delta that he and other members of the gang collected the ransom before they released their victim.
Mrs Celestina Kalu, the Delta state police public relations officer said the suspect confessed that he got in touch with one Ifeanyi Chukwuemeka from Issele-Uku in Delta State who linked him to one of Okonjo’s family members that assisted with masterminding the crime.
Chukwuemeka reportedly disguised as a corps member to gain entrance into the building and kidnap the octogenarian.
The suspect also confessed to kidnapping of a pastor’s wife and her friend as well as her brother in Uguoba, Oji River in Enugu State in October 2014. They requested for N4million but later settled for N1.2million from the victim.
