While addressing a delegation at his Abeokuta residence former president, Olusegun Obasanjo reiterated that he will remain a statesman with no affiliation to any political party in Nigeria.

The former president, however, held that in spite of not being an active player in the political circle anymore, he wants nothing but a Nigeria where good leadership is the order of the day, The Punch reports.

Speaking to a delegation led by Kogi state governor, Idris Wada, Obasanjo went on to declare his intentions of supporting any leader with great leadership traits and genuine intentions to improve the nation.

“We should understand first that not the party makes the person, but the person makes the party. It is who you are that you bring into the party. For now, I remain a partyless Nigerian, but I will continue to welcome any Nigerian with good leadership qualities.

“It does not matter which party you are, either PDP, APC, Labour, APGA or any party at all; as long as you are a committed, sincere and a purposeful leader, I am ready for you,” he said at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta on Monday, August, 10.

He also praised Wada’s progressive administration in Kogi state.

In response, Wada said Obasanjo is a father whose commitment and dedication is easily seen and learned by his followers.

“Everywhere we meet Baba, we learn a lot and we shall continue to learn from him. He is a father of the nation. He is a figure we admire.

“We pray that we all will be like him because he is a committed Nigerian, who has devoted himself to the growth of the country. So, why not, if some of us decide to emulate him, be with him and appreciate him?”

This comes as a breath of fresh air after Obasanjo who was the chairman, board of trustees, Peoples Democratic Party destroyed his membership card in the full glare of the public on February, 2015.
