They appear to have one of the most rock-solid relationships in Hollywood, but Angelina Jolie has confessed that working with husband Brad Pitt on new movie By The Sea severely tested their marriage.
Directed by Jolie, it is the first time the stars have collaborated on screen since 2005’s Mr and Mrs Smith and centres on a couple trapped in a loveless marriage.
They shot in Malta straight after marrying in August 2014 and speaking to The Telegraph, Angelina said it perhaps wasn’t a great way to spend their honeymoon.
“There were a few days when we thought [a working honeymoon] wasn’t the best idea,” she said.
“There were days during filming last year when we were really worried and it was hard.”
The actress, 40, who has six children with her partner of a decade, said that if they hadn’t been together so long, working on the film could’ve been dangerous.
The Oscar winner continued: “If we had married and were just starting a relationship it would have been a disaster, but because we have been together so long we wanted to see how far we could push our relationship and our love and see if we can work together under very intense circumstances and with very complex issues and see if it would make us better.”
It looked like things were back on track last week though as the couple cuddled up at the world premiere of their new film in Los Angeles. Looking angelic in white, Angelina was practically beaming as she shared loving glances with her partner.
Previously Angelina has insisted that they did not share share the problems of their characters.
She said during a rare interview with the Today Show: “We were joking… We were saying, like… ‘See, this is the beginning. And then this is 10 years later. This is what 10 years of marriage will do to you.’
“I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film.
“It’s because we’re actually very, very stable and these aren’t our issues,” she added.
