Gary Lineker and wife Danielle splits because he’s ‘too old to start another family’

Gary Lineker and wife Danielle are set to divorce after six years of marriage.

Last night the former England captain confirmed the news to the Daily Mirror but said he would not be commenting any further.

The football pundit, 55, and the model, 36, reportedly ended their relationship because Danielle was desperate to have another child, but the father-of-four felt he was too old to start another family.

A decree nisi issued today will formally bring their marriage to an end.

The couple, who wed in Italy in 2009, are believed to have gradually fallen out of love with one another and have been living separate lives for a year.

The couple spent Christmas together but in recent months Danielle has spent more time in LA, while Leicester-born Lineker is tied to work commitments in the UK.

Sources also claim Danielle wanted to try for a baby but that Gary was completely against starting another family.

A source close to the pair said: “They made a great couple but their different views on having children is what made them realise they had to split.

“They both know it is the right thing to do and are looking forward to the future. They are convinced they will stay friends.”

They added: “Usually these things are very sad and often acrimonious but with Gary and Danielle it is very much friendly with no legal battle that can cost a lot of money.”

They didn’t use any solicitors and filed for divorce using a government website where they filled out the forms together. It cost about £400, rather tens of thousands in legal bills.

Gary, who is estimated to have a personal fortune of around £20 million, and his wife are also believed to have arranged an ‘agreeable’ financial settlement between them.

The 55-year-old and the Welsh lingerie model met after being set up on a blind date by a mutual friend.

Gary, who played for his hometown club as well as Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight, was previously married to childhood sweetheart Michelle Cockayne from 1998 to 2006.

The pair have four grown up sons together – George, Tobias, Harry and Angus, while Danielle has a 13-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

A spokesperson for the couple told the Mirror: “Gary and Danielle have decided to end their marriage and their divorce was confirmed today with a judge granting a decree nisi.

“They remain the greatest of friends and wish each other every happiness.”
