Is it an unspoken rule in showbiz? Well, if it is – Anastacia has just let the cat out of the bag.
The 47-year-old inspirational singer, who has beaten cancer twice and lives with Crohn’s disease, has revealed how she lied about her age to get ahead.
Anastacia , who burst onto the scene nearly 20 years ago, has admitted that at the beginning of her career she felt she had to lie and in fact claimed she was eight years younger than she was.
Despite being 30 when she made her breakthrough album, the Left Outside Alone star confessed to telling everyone she was just 22.
Speaking to MailOnline, Anastacia said: “Journalists would be asking me when I was born and how old my sister was and I would panic. But everyone [in the industry] does it.
“I thought that was what you were supposed to do. I thought it meant that I had made it. But I really don’t know how people can keep up with the lie.”
In 2008, former Pussycat Doll Nicole, now 36, admitted that she’d been lying about her age.
She revealed she was about to turn 30, when the band’s website claimed she was two years younger – 28.
When confronted about the white lie she said: “I should’ve said I was 27!” Awkward.
When you get the chance of a lifetime, you do whatever it takes, even if that means a few fibs. Well, that’s what Mila Kunis did.
The ambitious starlet was keen to snare her first high-profile role in That 70’s Show, and she told producers that she was turning 18.
Talking on Jay Leno, Mila admitted she was only 14, and insisted that it was only a little white lie.
“At one point … I was going to be 18,” she joked.
Supermodel Agyness Deyn claimed she was 18 when she met a modelling agent back in 2006.
She was in fact 24 – so not a teenager at all.
She admitted: “When I decided I would really do modelling I was like 18, and I think at the time that was quite old for a new face, so we knocked off a few years.”
Agyness is also not her real name – she was born Laura Hollins.
Rapper Eminem, 42, is probably the last person we’d expect to lie about his age.
In 1999, he said in an interview he was 24 when he was in fact 27. Did those three years really make a difference?
Nicki, who is rumoured to have a fake booty, also had a fake age when she first started out.
In 2011, the Pinkprint star was involved in a fight and unfortunately the police report released revealed her real age – which wasn’t 26, but 28.
There’s two morals to this story: Don’t lie about your age and don’t get in trouble with the police.
Here’s another example of the police exposing someone’s real age.
J-Lo had always claimed she was born in 1970 but when she and then boyfriend Puff Daddy were questioned about a shooting incident that occurred in a nightclub, she was forced to admit she was actually born in 1969 .
James not so blunt, nor truthful for that matter…
In an attempt to appeal to a younger audience, JB shaved three years off his age until he was busted by a broadsheet aged 36.
That’s not such a Beautiful lie.
The celebs don’t just pretend to be younger – if they need to be older to get something they will.
In 2001, Nadine auditioned for Irish Popstars and even won a place in a band before it was revealed that she’d lied about her age.
She was 16 years old, two years younger than the minimum age requirement of 18.
There was a happy ending though as she went to enter Popstars: the Rivals in the UK, bag a place in Girls Aloud, got famous, went to the US, opened an Irish bar, released some singles and the rest is a whole lotta history…
Nelly the rapper was betrayed by his birth certificate when Teen People put him in their Hottest Stars Under 25 round-up – a fact confirmed by his reps at the time.
Only, one call later and it suddenly emerged that he was, in fact, 28. Oh the shame. Try sticking a plaster over that one Mr Nelly…
Victoria Beckham is said to have let the cat out of the bag on this one, by revealing that after a few 29 birthdays, Geri had in fact turned 30 already. Ginger Spice was said to be 21 when finding fame with the Spice Girls but it turned out she was 25.
Mel B joked a few years ago that none of the girls actually knew what her real age was.
She said: “We still don’t know how old Geri is, to this day. But she’s the oldest and Emma was the youngest and me, Victoria and Mel C were all kind of in-between. So we were all quite close together in age.”
Sandra is another example of someone else pretending to be older to get a job.
The brunette beauty admitted that she lied to producers of Love Potion (no, us neither) telling them she was 29 in order to play an ‘older scientist’ when she was in fact a few years younger than that.
She was later outed by Vanity Fair magazine – this time for pretending to be younger.
Her response: “After a while, you have no idea how old you are because you’ve lied so many times.
“I always said I would never lie, but one time, when I didn’t it worked against me. So I figure you just keep them guessing.”
The British singer knocked four years off her age when she was trying to get signed.
She admitted: “When I was asked what my age was in that first meeting, I blurted out 23, when I was actually 27.”
“I didn’t plan on doing it beforehand and it wasn’t a calculated thing.”
She went on to say: “It was only afterwards I realised why I said it.
“I remember reading about KT Tunstall being old, and she was 27 at the time. So I felt that everyone was going to focus on my age, not my music. I thought I’d try and protect myself in that way.
“I think if I’d said I was 27, I wouldn’t have got signed. One hundred per cent.”
