THE INVASION OF GHANAIAN ACTORS INTO NOLLYWOOD

Ironically, the rejected stone clinched the “AMAA 2010 Best Actor”, courtesy of the role he played in Kunle Afolayan’s “The Figurine, araromire”. However, in recent times, Van Vicker has been toppled by his fellow country man Majid Micheal who is now the rave of the moment, enjoying top billings in movies. The matter has not gone down well with the Nollywood actors who feel they are being relegated to the background as they are assigned second fiddle roles as opposed to their Ghanaian counterparts. They insist that the financiers used the Ghanaian actors for selfish gains, since they charged lesser fees in comparison to the Nigerians, despite the constant low ebbed professionalism displayed. The Nollywood marketers who also double as financiers are of the view

THE FUNCTIONALITY OF FILM STUDIOS IN NOLLYWOOD

Despite its being rated as the second largest movie producing body in the world, it is ludicrous to note that filming in this modern day and age are carried out primarily on location. Filming on location is carried out in a real environment, void of studio equipments and accompaniments, set constructions, and ranges from the use of people’s homes in the urban and rural areas, eateries, to accessories / clothing stores, streets, and beaches. Filming on location, especially in the open isn’t free of natural/ artificial challenges such as bad / unfavourable weather, noise pollution from vehicles, passing aircrafts, society’s miscreants (area boys interference), unprecedented traffic, the need to obtain requisite clearance to film from residents and local authorities, unwanted

The Rise of Nigeria Nollywood Movies

Nollywood is the name of Nigeria’s movie industry. Movies and TV programs are non-existent in Nigeria before the 1960s. Since then, the government has spurred the growth of television broadcasting with strong support. In the 1980s, every state in Nigeria has its own broadcasting station. This sets the stage for TV programs and movie productions. In a few short decades, Nollywood has managed to surpass all expectations. Movies produced by Nollywood are very different from those produced by Hollywood. In Hollywood, there are easily accessible studios equipped with the latest technology and props for easy shooting of movies. But in Nigeria, movie production can take place everywhere – from homes, hotels to public areas. As such, Nollywood movies depend heavily on two things to be

Nollywood: What has happened to Igbo Movies?

There is no doubt that Nollywood has grown beyond expectation in spite of criticisms that have trailed the industry for some years. Our people obviously fail to appreciate the things that we have in this country. While promoting those of others, we look down on what we should improve upon to move us ahead as our pride. The industry may not be a perfect one but this can be achieved if only we do all we need to.   The criticisms generated are often centered on the name of the industry which most people say has no meaning and is non-existent because it was copied from America’s Hollywood which basically has no historical bearing. Theorists of this assertion should realize that there is nothing about a name and that a name is just word(s) by which a person or thing is described. Whether it is

The Nigerian movie industry (Home video Industry) a.k.a Nollywood has been generally accepted to have started, after the success of Ken Nebue’s “Living in bondage”. From then on, its expansion and attendant problems are known (by interested parties). On the other hand , events preceding 1992, are not well known even though a few have tried to trace the history of Nollywood. Here is an abridged version ( yet richly enlightening) from one of the articles i wrote concerning this subject matter. Film exhibition began to thrive during the Colonial era, with Glover Memorial Hall playing host to a range of memorable films viewed by “potential Nigerians”, in August 1903. However, the non-availability of proper records reflecting the title of the debut film exhibited has
