Nigerian immigrants have the highest levels of education in Houston and the nation, surpassing whites and Asians, according to a Census data bolstered by an analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys, Leslie Casimir of the Houston Chronicle reports.
David Olowokere, originally from Nigeria and the chairman of Texas Southern University’s department of engineering technologies, told Casimir that holding a master’s degree just wasn’t good enough for his people back home. So he got a doctorate. His wife, Shalewa Olowokere is a civil engineer and hold a master’s degree.
According to a 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, 17 percent of all Nigerians in the U.S. hold a master’s degree, 4 percent hold a doctorate and 37 percent have a bachelor’s degree. In
THE Federal Government has concluded plans to construct more prisons to improve the current state of jail houses in the country.
Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, said this, Wednesday, in Abuja, when a British government delegation met with him in his office.
Moro said severe conditions in jails had contributed largely to the current security challenges in prisons across the country, especially the incessant jail breaks and attacks on such jails.
He said part of the plans for prisons was to ensure that the agreements reached by Nigeria and British governments on prisoner- exchange were also effected.
Moro said: “Prisoner- transfer would have been a thing of the past, the political will is there, and the leadership support is also there, but some legislative technicalities need to be taken
South Africa has apologized for a mass deportation of Nigerians, saying officials at Johannesburg’s main airport did not properly check their health certificates.
At a news conference in Pretoria Thursday, deputy foreign minister Ibrahim Ibrahim said: “We wish to humbly apologize to them, and we have.”
Two diplomats from the Nigerian High Commission accompanied Ibrahim to the news conference, but refused to comment beyond a joint statement that described tit-for-tat deportations the two countries say should not affect their relations. On March 2, South Africa deported 125 Nigerians who, according to airport health authorities, carried fraudulent yellow fever cards. Since then, authorities in Lagos have deported South Africans, raising health concerns.

“Barely 24 hours after the second batch of 56 South African deportees were sent home, the Nigerian government said it has uncovered a prostitution ring ran by a high profile South African businessman with 67 prostitutes in his employment both in Abuja and Lagos.
Consequently, the government has concluded plans to deport the 67 prostitutes who are believed to be HIV positive.
The move is part of government deliberate policy to double the figure of the 125 Nigerians deported by South Africa before the consideration of any diplomatic solution to the lingering feud with the South African government.” FL News.

At 22, Miss Adejoke Ogunlana is probably one of Nigeria’s youngest lecturers. She speaks on her challenges as a young lecturer and what government should do to drive the nation’s education sector.
Call it teaching or lecturing, only a few Nigerian youths are likely to celebrate a teaching or lecturing appointment. The general belief is that teaching is not on the list of lucrative jobs in the country. In fact many see it as a job you opt for when efforts at getting better jobs fail.
But interestingly, this is not the case with 22-year-old Adejoke Ogunlana, who teaches Chemistry at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
A 2009 graduate of Chemistry from the same university, Ogunlana settled for teaching while in school. So it was easy for her to accept an automatic
KANO, Nigeria—The assault bore the hallmarks of long-term planning: Cars loaded down with heavy explosives and driven by those willing to die, men wearing security uniforms and ready to shoot any official who believed they belonged to the government they despise.
The coordinated attack in Nigeria’s second largest city by the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has shown its metamorphosis from a group that sent out lone motorcycle-riding gunmen to one that deployed scores of killers who moved with military precision. Nigeria’s ill-equipped police and military have been unable to confront this growing threat to peace in Africa’s most populous nation.
“Nigeria has never seen anything like this before,” said Elizabeth Donnelly, an analyst at the London-based
Amnesty International today reiterated its call on the Nigeria Police Force to stop shooting at protesters after at least three were killed and 25 injured in the past two days.
The organization urges the Nigerian authorities to reform Nigeria’s police regulations in line with international standards, to prevent additional loss of life and ensure that the police only use firearms when it is strictly necessary to protect life.
Amnesty International has repeatedly called on the authorities to repeal Police Force Order 237, which provides guidance in use of firearms by the police in Nigeria. It is so broad that it permits police officers to shoot protesters, whether or not they pose a threat to life. Amnesty International considers it unacceptable that force order 237 instructs police officers

“Atiku should withdraw now if he loves himself. He would be humbled by President Goodluck Jonathan. If he withdraws now, it will be a saving grace for him, but if he insists on going ahead with the primaries, that will be the end of his political career. “During our emergency meeting to deliberate on the state of affairs in Nigeria, it was clearly revealed to us that the days of Atiku’s relevance in Nigeria’s politics are over. He is just wasting his money, energy and resources. His campaign is in vain. His fate is already sealed. He
Nigeria offers Investors in the Entertainment arena the opportunity of reaping bountifully and smiling to the banks. The reason is not far fetched. “Nigerians love entertainment” whether via the TV screen (movies, soap operas, musical programmes, sitcom, reality shows) or off screen (promenade shows, concerts , stand up comedy / dance shows) and other entertaining events. Despite the fun galore, the rapid moral degeneration projected through the various entertainment programmes has given room for children, teens and young people to pick up bad habits in the absence of working parents who ought to supervise what they watch.
A nostalgic feeling is created when one goes down memory lane, especially into the 80’s era, where sex, crime, lust for power and money, indecent dressing, low moral
Does Nigeria Need Re-branding?
By Gbenga Kayode
“If Nigeria dissolves into the ocean today, … what do you think the international world would miss?” Sounds puzzling and somewhat embarrassing to answer? Your response to this poser may be right or wrong, depending on how passionate you are about Nigeria and your honest perception of the country as an active yet currently less-respected member of the international community.
The seemingly confusing question was posed to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a leading Information and Communications Technology training firm based in Ikeja, Lagos, by one of his American friends during a business trip to the United States recently.
According to the company’s Chief Executive, who is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University
Culture is projected through the outfits worn, greetings/exchange of pleasantries, marriage ceremonies, births and death ceremonies, business transactions, religious inclination and other social and moral dispositions. Culture brings about easy identification and assimilation into a group, and also distinguishes one from another group.
Since culture embodies the way of life of a particular group, can we boldly say that the reading culture is an integral part of our every day life, especially in teens and youths? Do Nigerians place a high premium on it? Is the reading culture being imbibed by the young ones at an early age? Do Nigerians love reading books? Unfortunately the answers are all in the negative.
