There was confusion and panic in Enugu metropolis on Tuesday over an explosion at the old New Artisan Market, which is mostly populated by Northern livestock traders.

A loud explosion occurred at the market on Monday night but news of the development spread across Enugu on Tuesday.

Although the cause of the explosion was yet to be determined, eye witnesses who were around when the blast occurred suggested it was a bomb blast.

Our correspondent learnt that a generator battery, which could be the component of an improvised explosive device, was discovered at the scene of the explosion on Tuesday morning.

Eye witnesses informed our correspondent that policemen eventually took away the material.

No life was lost in the incident, but our correspondent who visited the market on Tuesday observed that some makeshift stalls were destroyed by the blast.

A team of mobile policemen were observed at the area when our correspondent visited.

Some of the traders, who spoke with our correspondent, said an explosion was heard in the market around 8:00 pm on Monday night.

One of the traders, Yahaya Umar, said everybody around the makeshift market at the time ran away when the explosion occurred.

He said, “The sound was so loud, it was like a bomb went off and everybody took to their heels. I was close to the site of the explosion, but I had to run away. It was so scary.

“It was just one explosion but it was very loud.

“After about 30 minutes, we started coming back to the scene. We thank God no life was lost but some stalls, which were located at the site of the explosion, were destroyed.”
