Gang-Raped
India is fast becoming the gang-rape capital of the world. A Swiss woman who was on a cycling trip in central India with her husband has been gang-raped by eight men, police said today. The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians. Authorities detained and questioned 13 men in connection with the latest attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest in Madhya Pradesh state after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said. The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple’s mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185). The number of HIV-positive people receiving life-saving ARV drugs more than doubled from 678,500 to 1.5 million after he took office, according to official statistics. The government of former

Devon Gluck, 21, knew what he had to do when an ATM gave him $1,800 that didn’t belong to him. It just took a while for him to compose himself to give it back, he said. Gluck went to a PNC Bank teller machine at the Trabant University Center at the University of Delaware on Feb. 1. He only wanted to withdraw about $40 but after the ATM made some noise, it gave him $1,800. “It was such a wild thing,” Gluck said. “It was the craziest thing that has happened to me. I had no idea how to react.” Despite urging from his friends to keep the money, Gluck, a senior studying finance, said he knew he had to return it. But he called his father the following day for confirmation. “I called him just to get that reassurance because he’s been a big influence on my

Tehran, the capital of Iran, has a rat problem. No, let me rephrase that: Tehran has a monster problem, and they just happen to look like rats. According to Tehran’s city council, radiation and chemicals that have been used against the rodents over many years have mutated the typically diminutive pests. The rats currently roaming the streets can weigh as much as 11lbs, and are now larger than the cats that used to prey on them. Chemicals and poisons that were once utilized to keep the pest problem in check appear to have no effect on the new, larger breed, so Iran called in the big guns – literally. After the sun sets, snipers with infra-red capabilities take up positions around the capital and begin scanning for the mutant rodents. After a night of “pest control,” the

Economists expect Nigeria, already the continent’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, to soon overtake South Africa in terms of GDP. The ever-expanding moonscape that stretches out behind a wall holding back the Atlantic Ocean here will one day host a project designed to help anchor Nigeria as Africa’s biggest economy. But if the ambitious plan to construct a new city on land reclaimed from the sea, called Eko Atlantic, represents Nigeria’s future, it is one that will be outsourced. Nearly every aspect of it will be privately run, from electricity supply to security. Economists expect Nigeria, already the continent’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, to overtake South Africa in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next several years,

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power offered odds of 11/4 against for Turkson, meaning successful punters would win 11 pounds for every four staked, while Britain’s second largest bookmaker Ladbrokes offered odds of 5/2 against. Turkson would be the first non-European to lead the Catholic church in more than a millennium if he is chosen to succeed Benedict. Italian Angelo Scola is second favourite according to Paddy Power at 3/1 against. “Pope Benedict quitting leaves a tall hat to fill – let’s just hope God gives him a good reference for his next
