The Anglican Church has said it will not release the body of the renowned author, Prof. Chinua Achebe, to the Ogidi community, Anambra State for burial.
Similarly, the church and family of the late professor have said that they will not allow his wife, Christy, to go through the traditional widowhood rites that women who lose their husbands in Igboland are made to undergo.
The Archdeacon of Ogidi and Vicar of St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Ven. Obi Ubaka, told Saturday PUNCH that the body of Achebe belonged to the church, which shall perform the final rites for the fallen statesman on Thursday, May 23.
The church’s reaction came as Chief S. Okoli, the Regent of Ogidi, Achebe’s hometown, said the late author would be buried at night because he was a titled man.
Okoli had said, “As a titled

The Federal Government on Sunday said illegal consignments and cash in local and foreign currencies were being smuggled on daily basis in and out of the country aboard private jets.
It also said some persons that securities agencies had declared wanted were being airlifted out of the country aboard private and chartered jets.
As a result, it insisted that pilots flying such jets must declare the passenger manifest before being allowed to take off.
An aircraft manifest contains the names of all persons aboard the plane, among other things.
The Coordinating Information and Communications Manager for aviation parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, told reporters in Lagos on Sunday that the order for the declaration of passenger manifest was necessary to check the abuse of the use of private and chartered
99 hoodlums have been arrested by officials of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit in Oshodi area of Lagos.
Just last week, the taskforce arrested 183 hoodlums and suspected criminals in Oshodi and charged them to court.
The suspected hoodlums who were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday at Oko Mola, a notorious area in Oshodi where hoodlums and suspected criminals snatch people’s bags and molest women, were taken to the taskforce headquarters at Alausa.
The ages of those arrested range between 13 and 35 years.
The 99 suspects included 25 girls, among whom is a pregnant 13-year old girl, Tosin Odebiyi, who ran away from her parent’s home in Abeokuta and a 16-year old girl, Shola Sunday who was found with a nine-month old baby and her lover,
The Nasarawa State Police Command has said that only 17 out of the 90 Police officers, excluding other security officers, who were on a mission to arrest the chief priest ofOmbatse Shrine, located at Assakyo village, about 10 kilometres from Lafia, the state capital, returned so far with various degrees of wounds.
Ombatse in Eggon language literally means “time has come”.
This came as President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, cancelled his scheduled visit to Namibia to personally oversee efforts by security agencies to contain the new security challenge in Borno, Nassarawa and Benue states. Already, 40 dead bodies of the missing policemen had been recovered from the forests.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam
Why are Naija companies laying off staff? Yesterday April 30th Visafone fired over 60 of their staff nationwide. Stanbic IBTC also sacked 250 of their staff. The sack takes effect from today May 1st.
The Stanbic IBTC sack yesterday crossed across all levels, from management to lower level staff and I hear this is just the first batch. The bank is planning to do another round later this year.
The sack at Stanbic yesterday only affected full staff employees as the bank intends to make its workforce 20% permanent staff and 80% contract staff. The total workforce before the sack yesterday was about 3000. The sad part is there are so many fresh graduates in the job market.

Here’s a brief of my observations:
* Hafiz Oyetoro aka Saka, appears to be the ambassador for this campaign. He was popular with the Etisalat brand and it seemed his loyalty to that brand was unquestionable. In this commercial, he is systematically unveiled as he sings the theme song, with emphasis (to my mind) on ‘I don port o… to MTN.’ That definitely cracked me up. I’m certain his Etisalat days are over. I doubt we’ll be seeing ‘Saka’ in any other adverts for Etisalat except to demonstrate how number portability enables him to

Dear fellow West African neighbours,
The news originating from your country since yesterday is that our under 17 boys who trashed you 6:1 at the on going Caf Under 17 nations cup are over aged. Apart from the MRI machine which disqualified about three of our players, how else do you determine the age of our boys? Probably by the score line. Hahahahaha.
Did we present over aged players at the South African nations cup where we trashed Mali and Burkinafaso that defeated you with ten men?
You must accept the fact that the giant of Africa is back to where it belongs. The last time you won nations cup was over thirty years ago when we were still recovering from civil war.
Now that we have recovered fully, you will not win anything again whether it is under 17 or over 17. Just pray that we dont meet
